PhD students

PhD students are primarily funded through one of two means….

UQ Graduate School scholarships

These are more competitive scholarships awarded centrally through UQ Graduate School. There are typically two rounds of intake per year (~March application for ~July start, and July application for January start). If you’re interested in these scholarships, discuss with your potential supervisor staff member on the ‘People’ page.

Project specific stipends

Funding is attached to a specific project such as an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant, industry project, etc.

We will advertise any open positions of this kind on this site. These stipends become available at random times and can commence on shorter notice than the Graduate School scholarships below.

Salaries can be seen here. For reference, typically directly after PhD graduation you would start on ~Level A6 and more experienced postdocs would be somewhere on Level B.

Bring-your-own fellowship

If you’re interested in joining the group as part of your own fellowship, either a fellowship you’ve already been awarded, or one you’re thinking of applying for such as an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), talk to us. For example, an ARC DECRA is ~20% success rate and typically runs for 3 years, pays your salary plus about $50k AUD/year of spending money. UQ also has a program ‘UQ Amplify’, which offers to extend your contract by an additional 2 years (5 years total), in exchange for doing some teaching.
